Understanding the Role That Connects Medical Devices, Regulations, and Market Access

Before a medical device can be sold, it must meet the regulatory requirements of each country or region where it will be marketed.

A company cannot simply design a product, manufacture it, and begin selling it. It must first determine how the product is classified, what technical evidence is required, which regulatory pathway applies, and whether approval, clearance, certification, or registration is needed.

The function responsible for managing these requirements is known as Regulatory Affairs, commonly abbreviated as RA.

In simple terms:

Regulatory Affairs helps a company obtain and maintain legal market access for its medical devices.

However, RA is not limited to preparing documents or submitting applications to government agencies.

RA professionals are involved throughout the entire medical-device lifecycle, from early product development and regulatory strategy to registration, product changes, labeling, post-market reporting, and license maintenance.
